Urban Fox
6 - 9 Berth Narrowboat, Silver Fox Class
Urban Fox is a large boat with flexible beds to suit small groups who prefer plenty of space or bigger groups of up to nine people. A member of our Silver Fox Class of luxuriously appointed Semi-traditional narrowboats.
A 6+3 berth with 3 permanent sleeping cabins that have a clever design which easily converts them from a double bed to 2 fixed single beds bed offering several combinations of single and double beds: either 3 permanent doubles; or 2 double and 2 singles; or 1 double and 4 singles. All sleeping cabins are separated by bathrooms and if used as a 4 berth both these cabins are en-suite. The galley, saloon and dining area are towards the front where another 3 people can sleep as it easily converts at night into another double bed and additional single bed. This traditional layout allows the main sleeping cabins to be out of the way from the social areas in the saloon and outside bow deck as well as offering the best tranquil views through the windows and front doors and this boat enjoys an additional feature of a secondary TV/Games lounge created by simply revolving a single bed in the forward cabin to converts it into a desk and T.V. – watch the video here.
Luxuriously appointed and beautifully crafted with an uplifting warm interior in Maple and Cherry woods that contrast with a sumptuous Walnut floor throughout. Facilities include 2 toilets, 2 showers, a comprehensively equipped galley with a full-size cooker and microwave, a 240v electrical system as well as central heating that provides great comfort from March to November.
At 69ft(21m) long she has a bow deck with space to socialise and a Semi-traditional stern that has an elevated steering position for greater visibility and improved weather protection in the steering cockpit. Popular with dog owners, the lockable doors provide the bonus of an ideal pen for dogs. Though there isn’t a guard rail to protect the steerer around the back deck, the semi-traditional stern has seating for 2 to 3 people on the storage benches when cruising.
Standard breaks for this narrowboat:
- Weekly & fortnight breaks (4pm Saturday afternoons to 10am Saturday morning)

Foxhangers Canal Holidays provided us with a unique and absolutely amazing chance to traverse across the Kennet and Avon canal. As a 24-year-old who thinks he has better stuff to do than go on a narrow boat trip with his family for a whole week, I was pleasantly surprised by how engaging, fun, and fruitful this experience was. From the allocation of roles on the boat to the inevitable pop-in to the pubs, I managed to spend some quality time with friends and family. The first day or two can be quite daunting, especially when you need to work the locks and make sure you don't hit any other boats, but they were all--in retrospect--good fun and great bonding. If you're worried about how to operate and maintain the boat, don't fret because Foxhangers will walk you through all that very thoroughly. They were also very responsive and patient on the phone whenever we called them while on the boat. Absolutely would recommend; 10/10 experience.

My party of six adults; family and friends enjoyed an amazing week on Urban Fox cruising to Hungerford and back in beautiful weather. Having hired many narrow boats around England over the years I found the boat exceptionally comfortable and easy to use and manoeuvre. It is obviously a bespoke design and build for hiring but fitted out to a very high standard of quality, comfort and amenity. We would have no hesitation in recommending or using Foxhangers again.

A Great Week on the Kennet & Avon Canal: Devizes to Bath The whole process from arrival and check in to handing the boat back was smooth, professional and well organised. The six of us were shown to the Barge in the Foxhangers Marina where we met David. He gave us a friendly, informative and thorough handover. Throughout the handover we were regularly asked if we were happy with our instructions, the whole process was very reassuring. Alongside this the on board information was excellent. We very quickly felt ready to get ‘all hands on deck’ and get going, very much looking forward to our week on the Kennet and Avon Canal. A special mention must go to Tom who came out to help us when we had a problem with needing to pump out the bilges mid week. There was no fuss or bother, Tom calmly discussed the problem over the phone with us. When we could not resolve it, Tom very quickly arranged to meet us at the nearest appropriate mooring at Bradford on Avon marina. He was so warm, friendly and efficient, our problem was solved quickly and we had a good laugh with him. We were so grateful and, due to his pleasant demeanour he was able to arrange for us to moor alongside another Canal boat company, where we spent a lovely evening. The whole experience was brilliant, a fantastic boat, a well run company leading to a very relaxing fun week, learning and achieving the handling of a 69ft Canal Boat. Would definitely use Foxhangers again and will recommend them to family and friends. Thanks again for a great week.

We had a Fantastic time on Urban Fox. After not seeing my family for a year my wife and I invited my brother, 2 sisters and brother in law to join us for a canal holiday. We decided to take the more energetic route heading up Caen Hill Locks. We went to Kinterbury and back. 114 locks in total. The boat was 69ft so just fitted into the locks. It ran beautifully and had everything we needed for the week. We had to contact Foxhangers at one point and they were helpful and sent out one of their team who sorted things for us straight away. We made a fantastic new friend, we met a lady travelling from Oxford to Bristol and offered to share locks with her so she wouldn't have to get on and off her boat at each lock. She loved the chance to just relax and drive. We took her through 55 locks before parting back at Foxhangers. In 2 and half days she covered what would normally take at least a week. The last day we did 29 locks in the pouring rain soaked to the skin and totally knackered but it will be a great memory for the future. Thank you Foxhangers for a great holiday.
Captain Cpt Susan Morfee, Urban Fox
We had a fantastic holiday a comment that was made when we were having a drink the first evening was it feels like ‘ home here now’. We enjoy each year to return to Urban fox. This year was a little different because my brother who we holiday with has sleep apnoea and has to sleep using a machine but he purchased a battery to operate the machine and manage perfectly well to charge in the day when we were moving the boat and it lasted all night. We look forward to returning to Urban fox again next year.
Captain Valerie Upton, Urban Fox
As a group of 6 friends we hired the Urban Fox as it gave us 3 separate cabins and meant we did not need to use the living area as a bedroom. On arrival we were greeted by one of the friendly members of the team, who showed us how to operate the locks and gave us tips on what to watch out for. We were then able to drive the cars, right down to the boat to unload, so we did not have to carry all our bags, food etc. We were then given a really informative induction of all aspects of our barge from handling the boat, safety on and off the boat, maintenance, on board facilities, troubleshooting etc which ensured we had the confidence to enjoy and relax onboard - though this is a big boat at 68 ft' we soon got the hang of it. The boat was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed on board, including all bedding, towels and fully equipped kitchen. There was also plenty of cupboards and drawers to store all our personal items. With 6 of us on board we had plenty of room and could all sit round the table for food or relaxing on the sofas in the evenings. The beds are really comfortable, though are quite narrow (as you would expect!). We headed west through the beautiful Wiltshire countryside and relaxed instantly to the slow pace of life. We stopped at lovely country pubs for food, jumped off the boat for walks and enjoyed mastering the locks and chatting to other boaters along the way. I would highly recommend Foxhangers and this stretch of the Kennet & Avon canal for a relaxing holiday with friends or family.
Captain Claire Lindsay, Urban Fox
To all at Foxhangers We have enjoyed our holiday on Urban Fox once again very much. Thank you for all the help and support we were given especially from Nick who was very professional when there was a complaint about us. Thanks for the warm reception we received and the help and support when we got on the boat. Many thanks
Captain , Urban Fox
We've just returned from a week on Snooty Fox and Urban Fox. We had an absolutely fantastic time. Come rain or shine, the boats were comfortable & easy to navigate. Foxhangers were fantastic. They gave us really good instructions, advice & were on hand should we have got into any difficulties on the trip. I would recommend hiring a narrow boat through Foxhangers : )
Captain Mr Thompson, Urban Fox
Thank you from all of us for a super week, and a super-prepared boat. Everything went smoothly and we were comfortable and had no issues with Urban Fox.
Captain Mr George Schlich, Urban Fox
We had a few days to spare so booked a last minute canal break. From the start the booking process was simple and Sharon in the office phoned to discuss our exact needs. We were able to book a far bigger boat than we needed and, as it was low season, for a period of days that wasn't within the normal swap-over range. Ray's handover was perfect. Just the right amount of information without under or overdoing it. The boat was immaculately clean and well equipped and the beds were already made up for us when we boarded. Fortunately there was plenty of spare bedding as it was typical bonfire night weather. Another nice touch was a bottle of wine, box of chocs and a mug for the captain. The autumn colours along the canalside were beautiful and the stormy skies and low sun made for some fantastic photo opportunities. Plenty of mooring spots and a plenty of pubs to walk to where we went to eat (and warm up) in the evenings. Would recommend The Barge, The Cross Guns and The Somerset Arms for hospitality and good gub. We usually go for epic multi-centre hols to obscure long-haul destinations but this was so relaxing....and great fun....that we would definitely like to return for a longer holiday and bring along our older kids rather than just the little ones as we did this time.
Captain Melanie Nunn , Urban Fox
We had a fantastic time on Urban Fox went to Hungerford, enjoyed the staircase of locks .A great welcome by the Foxhangers staff, Who support us well, the staff of Foxhangers are only a phone call away if required. Pubs good for meals. Booked for next year!
Captain Valerie Upton , Urban Fox
Our week aboard the Urban Fox was delightful. The level of service provided by Foxhangers can only be described as outstanding. The incident with a malfunctioning lock gate that almost scuppered our return to base was handled particularly well. The help provided by Nigel proved invaluable. Thanks again mate!
Captain Shane and crew , Urban Fox
Urban Fox was an apt boat name as we live in an area where urban foxes thrive. The boat was well equipped with a good range of kitchen equipment and crockery etc. The information book was excellent. We chose a boat with two showers and toilets. All was very clean, neat and tidy. Those that drove it found it handled well for such a long boat. We only turned the television on when we heard the news that the Queen was in failing health and were pleasantly surprised to find we had an excellent picture.
Captain Cpt Susan Tattam, Urban Fox
From our welcome from Sharon, to the excellent tuition from Richard our canal trip on Urban Fox could not have been bettered. The boat was excellent in every way – the comfort, the thorough inventory (absolutely everything we could have possibly needed) and the sheer pleasure and ease of such a large narrow boat which my sons thoroughly enjoyed operating through such lovely scenery. Well done Foxhangers!!
Captain Kay Chessell , Urban Fox
Sixteen members of our family, together with two dogs, had a wonderful week aboard Cunning, Flying and Urban Fox. For some it was their first experience, others had been on the canals on and off for the last 47 years. We thought they were the best narrow boats that we have ever hired! They responded well and were generously equipped. The holiday was great and all that we hoped it would be. Thank you Foxhangers team.
Captain Frances Maddison-Robert, Urban Fox
An amazing week shared with friends on a beautiful stretch of the Kennet and Avon Canal. Stunning scenery, good pubs and interesting places to explore, will definitely be returning. Thank you Foxhangers for making the experience so easy and stress free. Booking and relevant paper work was dealt with very efficiently. We valued the phone call before our arrival, plus the friendly welcome and information talk, we shall definitely be recommending you to all our friends.
Captain Mrs A Heath, Urban Fox
Thank you for a lovely holiday, we found the Urban Fox to be well equipped, easy to handle, which made for a great holiday. Thank you for the wine, chocolates, and captains mug, a lovely surprise. Your staff are very helpful and friendly and we can recommend your company to friends and family.
Captain P Everest, Urban Fox
Hi I would like to say Thank You so much to Foxhangers for an amazing experience From the first initial phone call to receiving chocolates and wine on our boat - you unpacked and put away my shopping that got delivered -- First Class Service We hired the Urban Fox which was very big and spacious and allowed 3 kids all to have separate rooms - we had 2 large Labrador on board as well and we survived a week with no arguments it was great We travelled to Hungerford and back in a week and met some really nice people / families along the way The Caen Hill was definitely an experience to remember and we had plenty of helpers along the way in total we opened and closed 104 Locks !!! Thank you again Foxhangers !!!!
Captain Mrs E Ford, Urban Fox
Thank you for a lovely holiday. I came with my aunties and uncles and we had a boat called Urban Fox. I loved that the cabin I had could be converted so that I had a desk for my games console. It was easy to do myself - when we first arrived a man called Richard showed us how everything worked. We did some fishing and I caught a fish but my uncle didn’t. I really enjoyed helping to operate the locks and my uncle even let me drive the boat! I am looking forward to going back next year.
Captain Christie aged 10, Urban Fox
Our party of 5 adults and a dog headed west from Foxhangers in Urban Fox for our 1 week "cruise". A fairly comprehensive hand over and we were on our way. Our 9 berth boat which we chose so we could each have our own bedroom without the need to make up beds in the lounge area each night and the freedom for everyone to turn in when they wanted to, worked well. It was very well equipped especially the galley. With the exception of one, all the canal side pubs made us, including the dog, very welcome. Food and drinks were outstanding everywhere we went. We made it to the Avon in 3 days at a leisurely pace before turning back. One tip we would highly recommend is to make a note of the places you want to stop on the return journey so you know where to stop to reduce walking. It can get busy in the popular spots and mooring spaces get filled quickly at the end of the day.
Captain Mr Wallis, Urban Fox
It was fantastic, but exhausting. The kids had an incredible time and the adults had fun too, (largely when the kids were asleep). The boat was huge, coped with the 8 of us very well and the weather couldn’t have been better.
Captain Mr R Whitbread, Urban Fox
We hired the Urban Fox for a week from 20th September and were blessed with really good weather. This was our first foray on a canal boat and we received excellent instruction from Richard before we were let loose! All the staff were brilliant from start to finish, being professional and very friendly. We encountered no operational problems and the barge was very well equipped with all you would need. It was very clean and we found the beds exceptionally comfy. Showers are small, to be expected, but we were surprised at how good the pressure was and plenty of hot water. A nice surprise in the fridge - wine and chocolates! We would thoroughly recommend Foxhangers!
Captain The Bates party, Urban Fox
We had a wonderful week - in glorious Autumn sunshine. The boat was very clean and comfortable and remarkably easy to handle. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Bath and all the delights of the Kennet and Avon canal it was a truly memorable week - thanks to you all at Foxhangers!
Captain The Hervey Party, Urban Fox
We had a fantastic holiday along the beautiful Kennet and Avon Canal. Staff were very friendly and helpful and I would thoroughly recommend Foxhangers. If you have the chance book it, it is worth every single penny!
Captain The Park party, Urban Fox
My family of 7 took a week cruising the Kennet & Avon Canal. This was my fifth venture into the canals and we were lucky to choose a week of fantastic weather. We were so glad we selected a Foxhangers canal boat: mechanically it performed exceptionally well and there were absolutely no operational problems throughout the whole week; the boat was clean and very well fitted with all the equipment we could need and every item functioned properly. The beds were comfortable; the lounge was a good size and the bathing facilities as good as they can get on a canal boat. I have absolutely no reservations in recommending Foxhangers to the 'beginner' or the experienced. With thanks for making our holiday one to remember for all the right reasons.
Captain The Palmer party, Urban Fox
Amazing holiday we "rushed" all the way to Bath and back again! The boat was brilliant plenty of room for 6 adults, and as each couple had their own room no arguments. The staff were fantastic, as we had never been on a canal boat before they filled us with confidence as we set off. Customer service from booking to returning the boat was 5*+. Trying to organise the (adult) kids to go again !
Captain Doreen Eccles, Urban Fox
Really enjoyed our trip to Bath and beyond on the Urban Fox, September 2013. Mooring up right in the city centre was amazing. Foxhangers staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful during the handover, and the boat was very well fitted out.
Captain The Martin Family, Urban Fox
We had a really lovely time and we particularly liked the new boat and its design: • Storage space and Big cupboards • 2 seater table in lounge • Kitchen facilities • Media suite • Brilliant number of mirrors and full length mirrors • Kitchen design • Water gauge
Captain Richardson Family, Urban Fox
I have had 6 narrowboat holidays and without doubt this was the best equipped and serviced boat that I have used. Your attention to detail of the cleaning and servicing was excellent and I would recommend your boatyard to any other hirer!
