Fennec Fox

2 - 5 Berth Narrowboat, Silver Fox Class

Fennec Fox is a smaller boat often favoured by couples or young families. A member of our Silver Fox Class of luxuriously appointed Semi-traditional narrowboats.

A 2+3 berth with a large permanent private double cabin located aft, followed by the bathroom and galley in the centre and the saloon and dining area at the front which easily converts at night into another double and single berth.  This traditional layout allows the main sleeping cabin to be out of the way from the social areas in the saloon and outside bow deck as well as offering the best tranquil views through the windows and front doors.

Luxuriously appointed and beautifully crafted with an uplifting warm interior in Maple and Cherry woods that contrast with a sumptuous Walnut floor throughout. Facilities include a toilet and shower, a comprehensively equipped galley with a full-size cooker and microwave, a 240v electrical system as well as central heating that provides great comfort from March to November.

At 50ft(15.2m) long she has a bow deck with space to socialise and a Semi-traditional stern that has an elevated steering position for greater visibility and improved weather protection in the steering cockpit.  Popular with dog owners, the lockable doors provide the bonus of an ideal pen for dogs.  Though there isn’t a guard rail to protect the steerer around the back deck, the semi-traditional stern has seating for 2 to 3 people on the storage benches when cruising.

Standard breaks for this narrowboat:

  • Weekly & fortnight breaks (4pm Saturday afternoons to 11am Saturday morning)

Just to say a big thank you to all at Foxhangers for making this one of the best canal holidays I have ever had! From the greeting (you welcomed our dogs almost ahead of us - a major plus!) through to our final drop off - the service has been exemplary throughout. Fennec Fox was beautifully and practically kitted out and we were most comfortable in both sun and rain. Heading West from Devizes allowed us to explore a stretch of canal that was unfamiliar but beautiful!

Captain Cpt Perry Jones, Fennec Fox August 2024

Thank you for a lovely weekend. The boat was well prepared, with comfortable accommodation, including the beds being made up, and all appropriate equipment provided. A thorough briefing was given on handling and running the boat and the features available on board. Written information and maps provided were a good information source and helped us plan our journey. Returning the boat was efficient with people on hand to direct and handover. Thank you again and we hope to return in the future.

Captain Cpt Alan Castle, Fennec Fox July 2024

Just spent 6 days with Foxhangers on the well-equipped Fennec Fox. Travelling West to Bath but not venturing out further onto the Avon and Bristol. On the run up to us joining Foxhangers made a call to ensure they were informed of actual amount of people travelling to ensure bedding and towels where correctly provided and then a further call to inform us of an issue on the canal (Eastbound) which may have impacted our plans had we been intending on travelling in that direction. It’s a whole different life on the canals, slow and steady! Hard work through the locks unless you are fortunate to have a willing/able crew or buddy up with another boat. The boats have everything you need to get by and as clean and comfortable as can be. A wonderful experience with a very organised and run team at Foxhangers.

Captain Cpt Adam Lliffe, Fennec Fox June 2024

I just wanted to say how much we enjoyed our short break. From the moment we arrived your team were helpful and friendly. Jim was very thorough in his handover and was very friendly and informative. We’ve always wanted to go on a canal boat and the Fennec Fox provided everything we needed for a home on the water and was also very comfortable. Even our water despising dog had a great time - despite having to be carried over to shore occasionally. We will definitely be back for a longer trip and have already recommended to everyone we have spoken to.

Captain Cpt Lisa Hollis, Fennec Fox July 2023

We had a lovely midweek break on Fennec Fox. The team at Foxhangers were very helpful and took time to explain everything. The narrowboat itself was everything we hoped for - ideal for a relaxing few days on the water.

Captain Cpt Nicholas Wells, Fennec Fox June 2023

We had a fantastic holiday boat was very well appointed and very clean your staff very helpful. I would recommend this firm to everyone

Captain Cpt Derek Beadel, Fennec Fox May 2023

We've had a fantastic week on the canals; Foxhangers operation is first class, looking forward to going again soon

Captain Cpt Stephen Shaw, Fennec Fox October 2022

We have had many adventures in our time, but this holiday topped them all. Fennec Fox was immaculate on our arrival and equipped with everything we needed. We had no previous experience, but we need not worry as we were given a comprehensive tour of the boat and instructions on how to use it. The lock demonstration before leaving helped calm any anxieties. Once on our way and with one days sailing under our belts, we quickly established who was best suited to navigating and who the lock manager was, such great fun. We could not fault the cleanliness of the boat and its facilities, all adding to a holiday which brought such peacefulness and calm. We were able to sail to Bath and then back past the Foxhangers Marina to conquer the Caen Hill Flight. Thank you again Foxhangers this was an amazing holiday.

Captain Cpt K Bravery, Fennec Fox September 2022

Our boat was clean, tidy, and well equipped for what we needed. The staff were very friendly and helpful and all possible information required was at hand in the onboard manual.

Captain Cpt Talleen Smith, Fennec Fox July 2022

Hi, just home and unpacked after a detour to walk the dog! Great holiday, loved the boat (Fennec Fox) and the canal with its scenery. Kids were all action working the locks and bridges and the dog loved whole feel of the journey, sat up front watching the world go by!

Captain Cpt Tom Siddall, Fennec Fox July 2022

We had a fantastic time. The boat was wonderful, tastefully and practically Fitted out and had everything we needed. Foxhangers were extremely well-organised and we felt we were in good hands. THe handover initially felt like information overload but once we got going it all made sense. We headed west and the stretch of canal along the Bath Valley was stunning. Many thanks,

Captain Cpt Tristan Wilson, Fennec Fox July 2023

Great holiday, thank you. Harder work than I was expecting. The friendliness of everybody we met on the canal has me thinking I need to get out of London as quickly as possible. Special thanks to your guy Andy who set us off on our way even though we were at least 2 hours late arriving, what a lovely and extremely helpful guy, he needs a pay rise as you can’t afford to lose a member of staff of that quality.

Captain Cpt Russell Naylor, Fennec Fox June 2022

Hello Sharon, Thank you for a wonderful holiday afloat… again! We had a wonderful time as always.

Captain Cpt Dr Stephen Johnson, Fennec Fox May 2022

Dear Foxhangers, We had a lovely few days on Fennec Fox. As we were novices the introductory session was clear and helpful. The boat looked very well maintained, the interior was spotlessly clean and well equipped with everything that we needed.

Captain Cpt Patrick Dobell, Fennec Fox April 2022

Really enjoyed our first rental of a boat after owning one for many years. The boat was high standard and the information which accompanied it exceptional. A great experience and well worth the money! Geoff & Shirley

Captain Cpt Geoffrey Grant, Fennec Fox September 2021

We enjoyed our holiday enormously and it was made so much easier by the way we were treated by staff at Foxhangers. The boat was prepared and equipped very well. Minor mishaps along the way were dealt with kindly and efficiently. We would recommend Foxhangers without reservation.

Captain Cpt Sue Windross, Fennec Fox June 2021

We had a lovely holiday. The two grandchildren enjoyed it in their own ways. The eldest, 13, seemed to sleep through most if it. The youngest, 7, didn't sleep at all! As ever, a smashing holiday. Our thanks to you and your colleagues for an excellent, supportive, service. All the best

Captain Gordon Morris, Fennec Fox October 2020

Had a fantastic trip as always! Despite the weather not being the best towards the end. Good, professional handover at beginning of trip. We will definitely be back for our 5th trip next year! We would highly recommend Foxhangers to anyone !

Captain Chris James, Fennec Fox September 2020

You and your team have been very friendly and helpful to deal with and we had a lovely week on the Fennec Fox. Thank you for all the measures you have put in place for keeping everyone as safe as possible and giving peace of mind.

Captain Liz Liesicke, Fennec Fox September 2020

The staff looked after us brilliantly, in what were trying circumstances. Our handover person, Billy, deserves special mention for the concern he took. I would recommend Foxhangers to anyone.

Captain Chris Hirst, Fennec Fox September 2020

We just returned from a tranquil 2-week holiday on the canal aboard the Fennec Fox in April 2009. The boat was well kitted out and very clean; everything works onboard. The canal passage to/from Bristol was nicely spaced out with serene countryside and busy Bath & Bristol. We particularly enjoyed the River Avon passage between Bath & Bristol, as it was a bit of an adventure. The sight of the Bath Weir and mooring just before it was truly an awesome experience. The one thing I’ve missed since returning to Singapore are the sounds of birds singing every morning…our wake up call.”

Captain Mark & Jessie, Fennec Fox

We had a lovey few days on the Fennec fox. It was well resourced with all we needed. The instructions for 'driving' the boat and operating the locks and bridges were clear and we had an enjoyable time all round. Thanks to all at Foxhangers.

Captain Mrs Tanya Stoner, Fennec Fox August 2020

Thank you for a wonderful week on Fennec Fox. This was our first narrowboat experience and if we had any expectations, they were certainly exceeded! The onsite briefing was excellent, the boat was beautifully clean and we found it surprisingly easy to drive and maneuverer. We took a leisurely week to journey to Bath and back, taking a couple of days away from travelling to explore Bradford-on-Avon and Bath itself. The week was wonderfully peaceful, an unexpected highlight was that we slept really well due to the lack of noise and streetlights. We met and chatted a few other holiday makers and liveaboards along the way, all very friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed our little taste of the cruising lifestyle.

Captain Mr Tony Jackson, Fennec Fox July 2020

Thanks very much - we had a lovely time pootling along on the canal in your beautiful boat.

Captain Mr Andrews, Fennec Fox

Awesome time, we have just returned from a midweek break on Fennec Fox ???? had a ball. Weather was glorious - bonus, boat was just right, had everything we needed, welcome handover and return were all 5 star. We have been with Foxhangers before and would recommend them, they are continually improving, Holiday was made so much better with a 11 o clock time to return boat. Which made the final day feel less rushed, a massive thank you to everybody for making our break so enjoyable, thank you all.

Captain Mickey Turner, Fennec Fox

Our recent narrowboat holiday with Foxhangers was perfect. All the staff were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The boat was great, the value exceptional and the cruise was the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of workaday life. On the canal, you are totally immersed in nature. At 3 mph, the vista unfolds before your very eyes, from avenues of trees to open plains, hills and valleys. You'll see herons and kingfishers and the birdsong becomes your aural focus. You'll smell the wild garlic as well as the coffee! We loved meeting other boaters at the locks, water points and moorings and discovering the diversity of canal folk. We'd love another holiday with Foxhangers!

Captain Chris Preston, Fennec Fox

We rented for seven days. We were very happy with Foxhangers, the boat was one of the smaller ones, but perfect for a couple. Everything worked excellent, the staff are very organized and helpful. The trip itself was a good way to see countryside and smaller towns. We spent 2 nights in Bath. Would rent from them again.

Captain Ricky Stoltz, Fennec Fox

This was our second visit to Foxhangers having been for the first time last year. The first visit we spent learning the ropes with a trip to Bradford-On-Avon and back. This year we were 'old hands' and travelled to the Dundas aqueduct. A superb trip on a very well presented boat. We will be back in the future perhaps to tackle the Caen Hill Locks - who knows.

Captain Mr L Hunter, Ms L Ashforth and the dog, Fennec Fox

Many thanks for our lovely stay aboard the Fennec Fox.Everything from the information provided beforehand, through to the handover and the facilities on the boat were excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Bath and were also most grateful for all the information provided about our route.

Captain Jim Wyatt, Fennec Fox

Foxhangers were a pleasure to deal with, excellent staff. Fennec Fox was a lovely boat and the canal was superb. We shall be back next year.

Captain George Henderson and Caroline Beach, Fennec Fox

A big thanks to all at Foxhangers. Despite the weather (30 mile per hour winds and driving rain) we had one of our best holidays ever. The Fennec Fox was perfect for first timers and easy for 2 to handle in and out of the locks. Returning next year to head up the Caen flight.

Captain Paul Long, Fennec Fox

We chose Foxhangers mainly on location as we wanted a short trip to test out our ability to manage a boat through locks with a dog on board. Heading towards Bath gave us a reasonable test without over taxing us. From the website on we were impressed by the attention to detail. The information on the boats, the canal, the history etc was better than most other hire companies. On arrival, everyone was very friendly and helpful.  They appear to be enjoying their jobs and all were fully briefed on what was happening. The boat (Fennec Fox) was in excellent condition and, as we lived on board for those few days, we came to appreciate how well laid out it was; discovering more and more places to store things. Everything worked well. We have no hesitation in recommending Foxhangers to others and will use them again if/when we return to the Kennet and Avon.

Captain Mr Paul Morris, Fennec Fox

Lovely weekend spent on the Fennec Fox celebrating hubby's special birthday. Experience was brilliant. Helped along by fabulous weather, professional and helpful staff. Thank you all.

Captain Mrs S Hawkins, Fennec Fox

Thanks for making this wonderful trip possible. We can not say enough your company.

Captain John and Ellen Monten, USA, Fennec Fox

Wonderful holiday, lovely boat, and at some point I will be back to do the lock stair! (really good arrangement with Rowde Village Shop, having such a wide range of food available to pay by credit card and then have actually delivered to the boat - first time we’ve had that available and it was a great ‘add on’ detail to the holiday).

Captain Mark & Sharon Chaldecott, Fennec Fox

Many thanks for a great boat and short break, Had a good time on Fennec Fox a really great boat. Have enjoyed dealing with all the staff at foxhangers. Look forward to seeing you again.

Captain Malcolm Sue Kirkby & Harvey the dog, Fennec Fox

To all at Foxhangers: After a gap of some 25 years on a narrow-boat, (only in France, once), Gail and I were moved into action to try it again, after watching the Tim West/Prunella Scales TV programmes. Luckily, (as it was a short time frame to try and find a narrow-boat to hire) we were able to find  several companies on-line that had boats available in different areas. Due to our location in Guernsey, we wanted the least travel distance, so Kennet and Avon was ideal, only a couple of hours drive from Portsmouth or Weymouth, where the ferries arrive. We chose Foxhangers over the others, for several reasons: 1.       The times we wanted were available 2.       The location was ideal 3.       The price was competitive, and in some cases, was over £200 cheaper! 4.       The boat layout was ideal for us After the booking, we received in short time comprehensive details for our booking, including maps and guides, and a very helpful DVD, which gave us time to study and prepare. At about 1445hrs, we arrived at Foxhangers and Richard advised us to load the boat with our stuff and then we went through the familiarisation for handover. Very comprehensive for the boat and  good run through on handling the locks, (as we were a bit unsure about that). We were happy to set off at about 1700hrs. About an hour journey for our first overnight stop. Everything on board was fine. Comprehensive inventory, great oven for the meals, all worked well and the beds were more comfortable than ours at home! We slept very well indeed. During our journey from Foxhangers to Bath and back, we experienced no problems at all. Everything worked as expected and the central heating was beneficial to dry out our clothes during a rather wet Easter weekend! We arrived back from a brilliant relaxing voyage at approx. 6pm night before handover, and spent an enjoyable evening ready for handing back next morning. All done and away by 0900hrs. In a nutshell,  Foxhangers: = “ Excellent boats, excellent service and assistance”. Thanks very much. Yours sincerely,

Captain Chris and Gail Murray, from Guernsey, Fennec Fox

A big thank you to Foxhangers. My wife and I have enjoyed a fab two weeks holiday aboard the Fennec Fox from the 6th to 20th July 2013. We have never been on a canal or narrow boat holiday before. Our holiday was magic, the weather was hot and sunny, the people we met were friendly and helpful, especially the volunteers from the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust guided us up and down the Caen Locks with muscle and knowledge. The Fennec Fox was well fitted out, with all the mod cons, as well as being attractively finished with wood panelled interior, making it attractive and functional. This was confirmed by other renters from different companies, that we met when sharing locks and looking in other peoples boats as you do!! So we enjoyed value for money as well as a great boat. We thoroughly recommend a canal holiday on a Foxhangers Narrow Boat. We travelled East to Hungerford and then back west to Bath, before returning to Foxhangers wharf. A couple of the magic bits: Lock 44 at dawn, we called it the infinity lock, because of the view. The section between Bradford on Avon and Bath, which because of the aqueducts has no locks and follows the contours of the valley is both beautiful and surreal in that you are piloting a boat that is halfway up a hill, and you can see the river Avon below. The inspired creativity that built this some two hundred years ago, puts the modern developments to shame. Bucket List Stuff !!

Captain David Somers, Fennec Fox

I just wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed our Foxhanger holiday.   The locks and bridges were harder work than I had expected, but I  managed nicely, while my husband expertly manned the tiller!  We  enjoyed it so much that this morning, we bought our own boat, which we  plan to make our permanent home! Once again, thank you.

Captain Mrs King, Fennec Fox

Party of 3 adults & 2 large dogs. Duration 1 week which leisurely took us to Bath and back (with a full day to spend in Bath). Weather - typically British; wet one day, dry and mild the next. We are experienced at narrowboating but this was our first time on the Kennet & Avon and of Foxhangers. The Kennet & Avon is a pretty canal, well served with waterside (or very near) pubs, serving very good food. The locks and swing bridges are fairly easy to use but only if you’re fit and some could do with better maintenance. Getting water was a bit of a task as our end of the hose didn’t fit some of the taps. (Can the Water Suppliers not standardise this?) Our boat, The Fennec Fox could not be faulted - very clean, extremely well stocked (we particularly appreciated the wet-weather clothing supplied) and the layout was the best that we have ever experienced. I was very impressed with the ease with which the salon seats converted to a double bed without having to utilise or haul the table around. We found the on-board information folder very useful and, although we were warned that we may not receive a good TV signal in places, the supplied aerial booster did its job well and we experienced no problems. All the staff were very professional, courteous and friendly. We would recommend Foxhangers and we hope to return.

Captain The Veal family, Fennec Fox

The boat was spotlessly clean and fantastically well fitted-out. We had a very thorough briefing on arrival and the staff were friendly and informative. An incredibly enjoyable week aboard a fantastic boat in some of the most stunning countryside that the UK has to offer. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending to friends and family.

Captain Christopher Allen, Fennec Fox

Once again a superb holiday. From arrival to departure we had quality service and a quality boat for our holiday. The areas along the canal are beautiful and the locals including those that live on the boats are so friendly and helpful. We are already looking forward to our 2011 holiday with you. If only we could have stayed longer. Many thanks,

Captain Adrian Taylor, Fennec Fox

We (my daughter and her family) had a fantastic time on Fennec Fox and I’ve now promised my son and his family that I will take them on it sometime soon. When they have some dates I will contact you again and check availability of Fennec Fox. Thank you for an amazing trip up the Kennet and Avon canal - we all enjoyed it immensely and Fennec Fox was a joy to live on.

Captain Pat Oldham The Dianthus Group, Fennec Fox

Just returned from a splendid week with the Fennec Fox. It was our first time on a narrow boat, however, the comprehensive information pack, plus the hands-on initial instructions and tips meant we had no problems operating the boat, locks or swing bridges. Mooring up in Bath just below the weir on my birthday was magical. Looking forward to our next trip.

Captain N. Arnott, Fennec Fox
